Bromley BR1 & BR2 · Victorian tile paths
A tiled welcome at the front door.
As local Victorian tile path installers, we lay Victorian-style tiled paths for Bromley's period houses, usually as part of a front garden that also needs a new wall, fresh paving or a gate rehung. Our best example is Ellie's front garden in Putney, with a new grey-and-white tile path to the door, shown below with before and after photos.

Your garden, considered
Around Bromley town centre, Bickley and Widmore there are many Victorian and Edwardian villas whose front path is the first thing a visitor walks on. A tiled path brings back the detail these houses were built with, and it works best when the rest of the front garden is put right at the same time.
At Ellie's house in Putney, the front had a broken rendered wall, loose gravel and an old path. We dug it all out, built a new red-brick wall, laid around 15m² of anthracite 60x90 porcelain, laid a new grey-and-white Victorian tile path to the front door and rehung the existing iron gate between the new pillars.
Even a path on its own is a proper job: a full dig-out, a concrete base and edging fixed along both sides, as on Dio's tiled path in Acton.

Materials & possibilities
A tiled path looks best when the surface beside it suits it. These are combinations we have actually built.
The path has to meet the doorstep at the right height, fall slightly away from the house and sit below the damp-proof course, with water draining to the garden either side. We set these levels before the concrete base goes in, so the tiles are laid flat and true with no lips at the step or the gate.
