Clearing the plants and old sandstone
The overgrown plants were removed and the existing sandstone was taken up and taken away, so the new paving could start from a fresh base rather than being laid over old, uneven stone.
Case study · Stockwell SW9 · June 2026
Warren's front garden in Stockwell had tired old sandstone paving and overgrown planting. We removed the plants, lifted the sandstone, laid a new base and finished the whole front in light grey porcelain. At the back, we cleaned and regrouted the existing sandstone patio. Three days, supplied and fitted for £5,860 including VAT.
Where we started
Warren's terraced house in Stockwell has a small front garden between the bay window and the boundary wall, with railings and a gate onto the street. The old sandstone paving there had worn and the planting had become overgrown, so the front of the house looked tired.
Warren wanted a clean, modern front garden that is easy to look after, and a refresh for the sandstone patio at the back. It is a typical project for our front garden landscaping in Stockwell.
Before & after
The tricky parts
Step by step
The overgrown plants were removed and the existing sandstone was lifted from the front garden and taken away.
A new base was laid across the front garden, ready for the porcelain.
The light grey porcelain was laid wall to wall, cut around the bay window, the front step and the gate.
At the back, the sandstone patio was cleaned with a pressure washer and the joints were regrouted.

Yes. Porcelain is hard-wearing, does not absorb stains easily and only needs a quick wash to look clean, which suits a front garden that gets daily foot traffic and bins.
Often, yes. If the slabs are sound, cleaning and regrouting brings sandstone back to life for much less than new paving, as we did on Warren's back patio.
Old joints crack and wash out over time, which lets weeds grow and water get under the slabs. Fresh grout seals the joints and makes the patio look finished again.
Warren's took three days, including clearing the plants, lifting the old sandstone, the new base, the porcelain, and cleaning and regrouting the back patio. Small front gardens are usually a few days' work.
