As local shed base installers, we lay concrete bases across Norbury SW16 for sheds, garden rooms, offices and bike stores, from our own base in Norbury. Recent bases include an 8ft × 10ft reinforced shed base laid in a day, a garden room base in Brixton Hill and a pumped base and steps on a steep garden in Shortlands.
A shed or garden room is only as level as the slab it sits on. We clear the footprint, dig out any old concrete and soil, set the area out square and level, and pour the concrete in one go so there are no weak joints. On clay ground, which most Norbury gardens have, steel reinforcement mesh in the slab helps it resist cracking as the ground moves through the year.
Garden rooms need more thought than a small shed. Franziska's garden room base in Brixton Hill was built as part of a five-day job with access through the house, alongside new turf, a sandstone footpath and new fence panels.
Where the concrete cannot be barrowed in easily, it can be pumped. In Shortlands, every material had to come through the house and up the steps, so a concrete truck and pump placed the base, the new steps and the shed base in one go.
An 8ft × 10ft concrete shed base with steel reinforcement mesh and a brushed finish, after removing old concrete and soil, completed in one day for £1,820 including VAT.
Every photo here is from Lucy's steep garden in Shortlands BR2, where the shed base, steps and patio base were poured with a concrete pump.

Which base do you need?
The size and use of the building decide how the base is built.
01
Shed base
Small and quick
A reinforced concrete slab with a brushed finish, like Mark's 8ft × 10ft base in Beckenham, done in a day.
02
Garden room base
Bigger and planned
A larger slab set out for a garden room or office, as in Franziska's Brixton Hill garden.
03
Base on a slope
Built up and held
A concrete wall holding a raised level with the base poured inside, as for Pedro's garden room in Purley.
Square, level and the right height
We set the base out square to the building and to level before pouring, at the height that suits the patio or path next to it, so the shed door opens freely and water does not run towards it. The concrete is then left to cure before the building goes on.
From first ideas to finishing touches
A clear path to your finished garden.
01
Measure
Check the footprint, the levels and how concrete gets in.
02
Quote
A written price for dig-out, mesh, concrete and waste.
03
Prepare and pour
Dig out, set out square, lay mesh, pour and finish.
04
Cure
Leave the slab to harden before the building goes on.

Porcelain patio and bullnose steps in Shortlands
Lucy's garden in Shortlands climbs steeply from the house, with access only through the house. With a concrete truck and pump, we placed the concrete for a patio base, new steps and a base for the existing shed, then clad the steps and laid 25m² of porcelain, in one week for £9,250 including VAT. Drag the slider to compare.
How much does a concrete shed base cost in Norbury?
Our concrete bases have ranged from £1,820 for Mark's 8ft × 10ft reinforced shed base in Beckenham, laid in a day, to £15,000 for Pedro's garden room base and 20cm concrete wall on a steep site in Purley. Size, the dig-out, access and whether the concrete needs pumping make the biggest difference.
Compare like for like. Check the slab size and thickness, whether steel mesh is included, how the concrete gets in and whether the old surface and waste are removed.

Shed bases laid from our Norbury base
Our base is here in Norbury, and we lay concrete bases across Norbury Park, Pollards Hill, Norwood Grove and Crown Point.
Norbury is in Croydon Council. Our documented bases are further out, in Beckenham, Brixton Hill, Clapham, Shortlands and Purley, and every one is shown with its distance.
Our 8ft × 10ft reinforced shed base in Beckenham was £1,820 including VAT, done in a day. Larger garden room bases cost more, from £5,650 for a job including a base in Brixton Hill.
Do shed bases need steel mesh on Norbury clay?
We recommend it. Clay moves as it wets and dries, and steel reinforcement mesh helps the slab resist cracking.
Can you lay a base for a garden room?
Yes. In Brixton Hill we built a concrete base for Franziska's garden room, with access through the house.
How is concrete got into a garden with no side access?
It can be pumped. In Shortlands a concrete truck and pump placed the shed base, steps and patio base on a steep garden reached only through the house.
How long does a shed base take?
Mark's 8ft × 10ft base in Beckenham was dug out, reinforced, poured and brushed in one day, then left to cure.
Can you build a base on a sloping garden?
Yes. In Purley we built a 20cm concrete wall to hold a raised level and poured the garden room base inside it.
Do you lay bases near Pollards Hill and Thornton Heath?
Yes. We cover all of Norbury plus Pollards Hill, Norwood Grove, Thornton Heath, Streatham Vale and Upper Norwood.
