Old concrete in the way
The area had old concrete under the soil. Pouring new concrete on top of it would have left the base uneven and prone to cracking, so we broke it out and took it away with the soil.
Case study · Beckenham BR3 · September 2026
Mark needed a solid, level base for a new shed at the end of the garden in Beckenham. We dug out the old concrete and soil, laid steel reinforcement mesh and poured an 8ft × 10ft concrete base with a brushed finish, all in one day, for £1,820 including VAT.

Where we started
Mark wanted a new shed at the back of the garden in Beckenham, along the fence line beside the existing patio. The ground there had old broken concrete and soil, which would never give a shed a flat, dry footing.
The base needed to keep the shed level and square for years, and still be strong enough for Mark to put up a small garden room instead later on. Our shed bases in Beckenham are built for exactly that.
The tricky parts
Step by step
We removed the soil and broke out the old concrete across the 8ft × 10ft footprint, then took all the waste away.
The area was set out square and to level, so the slab would finish flat and at the right height against the existing patio.
Steel reinforcement mesh was laid in the base before the pour, to help the slab resist cracking and carry heavier loads.
The concrete was poured, levelled and given a brushed finish, all on the same day. The base was then left to cure before the shed went on.
The finished work
Budget
This base cost £1,820 including VAT, materials, labour and waste removal. The things that set the price were the size, breaking out and removing the old concrete and soil, and the steel mesh. A larger base, a deeper dig or difficult access would cost more. See more on concrete bases and groundworks in Beckenham.

This 8ft × 10ft reinforced base in Beckenham cost £1,820 including VAT, materials, labour and removal of the old concrete and soil. Price depends mostly on size, what has to be dug out and taken away, and access to the garden.
This one was dug out, poured and finished in a single day. The concrete then needs time to cure before a shed or garden room is built on it; we will tell you when it is ready to use.
Mesh is not always essential for a small, light shed, but it makes the slab much more resistant to cracking. We recommend it when the base might later carry something heavier, such as a garden room.
A reinforced base like this can suit a small garden room, but it depends on the building's weight and the supplier's requirements. Tell us what you plan to put on it and we will size the base to match. See our garden rooms page.
