Beckenham BR3 · Flower beds & raised beds
Raised beds that lift your planting out of the clay.
As local landscapers, we build raised flower beds in Beckenham BR3 in timber sleepers and brick, filled with fresh topsoil and set out to frame a lawn, a patio or a path. In Elmers End we edged both sides of Robert's new astro lawn with sleeper beds in three days.

Your garden, considered
Heavy clay is slow to drain and hard to dig, so plants sitting in it often struggle through a wet winter. A raised bed filled with good topsoil gives roots a free-draining layer above the clay, warms up sooner in spring and saves you bending down to weed.
Beds also give a long Beckenham garden its shape. Run them down both sides and the lawn or paving becomes a clear centre, as in Robert's garden in Elmers End. Build them in brick around a lawn and they become low walls you can sit on, as in Andrew's garden in Streatham.
We build the beds as part of a bigger job or on their own, and we fill them with fresh topsoil so they are ready to plant the day we leave.

Materials & possibilities
Both make a neat, raised edge. The choice comes down to the look you want, the height and how long you want them to last before any upkeep.
A raised bed is only as good as its soil. We clear weeds and old roots, lay the sleepers level or build the brickwork on a footing, and fill with fresh topsoil rather than the clay dug out of the garden, so the bed drains and the plants have something to root into.
From first ideas to finishing touches
We look at the light, the soil and where beds would frame the garden best.
Size, height, sleepers or brick, and the topsoil needed, priced in writing.
Clear the area, set the sleepers or build the brickwork, fill with topsoil.
We leave the beds raked level and the garden cleaned down.

Sleepers are quicker and have a natural look; brick is more permanent and can be capped to sit on. Andrew's Streatham garden used both.
