Removing the old deck and frame
The old decking boards and the frame underneath were taken out completely, so the new deck sits on a fresh, sound frame.
Case study · Beckenham BR3 · April–May 2025
Carmel's back garden in Beckenham, towards Bromley, had an old deck across the back of the house. We removed the old deck and its frame, supplied and fitted around 50m² of new composite decking with a step, built a custom 8m x 4m pergola on site over it, and supplied and fitted around nine closeboard panels on concrete posts and concrete gravel boards down the side. Carmel painted the pergola afterwards. Around 10 days, £18,000 all in, including VAT.
Where we started
Carmel's garden in Beckenham, on the Bromley side, had an old deck along the back of the house that had come to the end of its life. The aim was a bigger, low-maintenance outdoor room: a new deck, a pergola big enough to shade it and new fencing down the side.
Rather than an off-the-shelf kit, the pergola was designed and built on site to fit the full width of the house. It brings together the decking in Beckenham, pergolas in Beckenham and fencing in Beckenham we install.
The tricky parts
Step by step
The old deck and frame were removed, and the custom pergola was built on site over the deck area.
Around 50m² of composite decking was laid across the back of the house, with a step down to the lawn.
Around nine closeboard panels were fitted on concrete posts and concrete gravel boards.
The finished work
Budget
This project came to £18,000 including VAT, all in: removing the old deck and frame, supplying and fitting around 50m² of composite decking with a step, building a custom 8m x 4m pergola on site, and supplying and fitting around nine closeboard panels on concrete posts and gravel boards, over about 10 days. The painting of the pergola was done by the client. See our decking in Beckenham and pergolas in Beckenham pages for more.

Carmel's project in Beckenham BR3 cost £18,000 including VAT for removing the old deck, around 50m² of new composite decking with a step, a custom 8m x 4m pergola built on site and around nine closeboard fence panels on concrete posts, done in about 10 days.
Yes. This one was custom built on site to 8m x 4m so it spans the full width of the deck along the back of the house, rather than using a fixed-size kit.
Yes. Here Carmel painted the pergola after we built it. We can leave it ready for painting or finish it for you.
Composite decking does not rot, splinter or need yearly sanding and staining, so it stays looking good with just an occasional wash.
Timber posts and boards rot at ground level first. Concrete posts and gravel boards do not, so the fence stays straight and only the panels ever need replacing.
Yes, including Bromley, West Wickham and Shortlands. See all our landscape gardeners in Beckenham.
