A new timber frame on bare ground
There was no old deck, just a soil area, so everything was built from scratch. We built a new timber frame across the whole area so the deck is level, solid and properly supported.
Case study · Brixton SW2 · April 2026
Caroline's back garden in Brixton had a bare soil area at the back. In four days we turned it into around 25m² of Millboard Enhanced Grain composite decking, built on a new timber frame, finished with edge and fascia boards and cut neatly around the two trees that grow through it. Fully supplied and installed, £7,000 all in, including VAT.
Where we started
Caroline's garden in Brixton has a lawn near the house and, at the back, a bare soil area with two trees. Caroline wanted composite decking across that back area, built around the trees.
Millboard composite boards on a new timber frame were the answer: they look like real timber but do not rot, splinter or need staining. It is a good example of the decking in Brixton we build.
Before & after
The tricky parts
Step by step
A new timber frame was built and levelled across the deck area.
The frame was built around the two trees, leaving room around each trunk.
The Millboard composite boards were laid across the frame and cut neatly around each tree.
Edge and fascia boards were fitted to finish the sides, and the deck was cleaned and handed over on day four, ready for planters and furniture.
The finished work

Budget
This deck cost £7,000 including VAT, all in, for around 25m² of Millboard Enhanced Grain composite decking with edge and fascia boards on a new timber frame, supplied and installed in four days. That works out at roughly £280 per m² for the complete job. Softwood decking costs less; larger decks or extra features such as steps and lighting cost more. Millboard looks like natural timber but does not rot, splinter or need staining or oiling, so it stays looking good with just an occasional clean. Timber is cheaper to start with but needs regular upkeep.
Yes. The frame and boards are cut around the trunk with a gap left for the tree to move and grow, as we did for the two trees in Caroline's garden.
Edge boards are matching boards that finish the cut ends around the outside of a deck, and fascia boards cover the sides of the frame. Together they hide the timber frame and give the deck a clean, finished edge.
Caroline's 25m² deck took four days, from building the frame on bare ground to fitting the last fascia board.
A properly built, level frame. On this deck we built a new timber frame, which gives the composite boards solid support across the whole area.
