Curved Raj Green sandstone patio in Wandsworth

Richard's back garden in Wandsworth was bare soil behind the house. We dug it out, put in a compacted base and laid a Raj Green Indian sandstone patio with a curved edge sweeping round to the lawn, plus a new manhole cover. Three days, £4,000–£6,000 including VAT.

Where we started

The brief

Richard wanted a proper patio behind the house in Wandsworth, where the garden was just soil.

A curved edge where the paving meets the lawn softens the layout and gives the garden a natural flow. It is a good example of the patios in Wandsworth we lay.

The tricky parts

What went into it

01

A full dig-out

The soil was dug out to make room for a proper base under the new patio.

02

A compacted base

The base was laid and compacted with a plate compactor before any stone went down.

03

Raj Green Indian sandstone

Raj Green sandstone was laid in a random pattern, mixing the stone's greens, golds and browns across the patio.

04

A curved edge to the lawn

The patio edge was cut to a smooth curve where it meets the lawn.

05

A new manhole cover

A new manhole cover was fitted so the drain stays accessible in the new patio.

Step by step

How we built it

  1. Digging out and the base

The soil was dug out and the base laid and compacted, following the curve of the new patio.

  2. Laying the Raj Green sandstone

The Raj Green sandstone was laid in a random pattern along the house and round the curve to the lawn, with a new manhole cover fitted.

Questions

About Raj Green sandstone patios

Thinking about something similar? These are the questions we hear most.

How much does a sandstone patio cost in Wandsworth?

Richard's Raj Green sandstone patio in Wandsworth SW18 cost £4,000–£6,000 including VAT, covering the dig-out, a compacted base, the stone, a curved edge and a new manhole cover, done in three days.

What colour is Raj Green sandstone?

Despite the name, Raj Green is a mix of soft greens, golds and browns, so every slab is a little different and the patio looks natural.

Can a patio have a curved edge?

Yes. The edge slabs are cut to follow a curve, as here where the patio sweeps round to meet the lawn.

What happens to a manhole when you lay a patio over it?

Drains must stay accessible, so a new cover is fitted at the finished patio level.

Do you lay patios near Wandsworth?

Yes, including Earlsfield, Putney and Southfields. See all our landscape gardeners in Wandsworth.
