As local turfing contractors, we lay new turf across Bromley, either as a straight lawn replacement or as the finishing touch to a bigger garden project. Under a mile from the town centre, in Shortlands, we dug out a whole garden through the house and finished it with Kandla grey paving and new rolled turf.
In Bromley a new lawn is often one part of a larger change. A tired garden gets a patio by the house or a border of paving, and the turf fills the middle. Planning the two together means the lawn sits at the right height against the paving, so the mower runs straight over the edge and water does not collect where the two meet.
That is exactly how Kirsty's garden in Shortlands was done. With access only through the house, it was fully dug out, 25m² of Kandla grey paving was laid around the edge, topsoil went into the middle and new rolled turf was laid on top, for £8,000 including VAT.
If you only need the lawn, we lift the old grass, dig and turn over the soil, spread and level fresh topsoil and lay new turf, usually in two days for an average back garden.
A thin, patchy 50m² lawn replaced: soil dug and turned over, old lawn and waste removed, fresh topsoil spread and levelled, and Rolawn Medallion turf supplied and laid, in two days for £3,500 including VAT.
A new red-brown block paving driveway, Autumn Indian sandstone down the side and across the back, five clad steps, a ramp, a curved path beside new turf, a sleeper bed, eco drains and three recessed manhole covers, with over 100 tonnes of soil removed, in four weeks for around £45,000 including VAT.
A garden stripped back and rebuilt in two weeks: a rendered retaining wall, around 20m² of curved beige porcelain, a 4m x 4m composite deck, steps, new turf and circular flower beds.

Materials & possibilities
Which kind of lawn job do you need?
We price every lawn job from the survey. These are the three we are asked for most around Bromley.
01
Turf on its own
Two days for most gardens
The old lawn comes up, the soil is turned over and topsoiled, and new turf goes down. In Catford, 50m² of Rolawn Medallion was laid this way for £3,500.
02
Turf with paving
Planned as one
Paving and lawn built together so the levels and edges line up, like the Kandla grey and rolled turf garden in Shortlands.
03
Part of a full rebuild
The finishing layer
On bigger projects the lawn goes in last. In Orpington, turf was laid beside a curved Indian sandstone path at the end of a four-week garden and driveway project.
Getting the edges right
Where a lawn meets paving, the turf should finish just above the stone so you can mow straight across without catching the blades. We set the topsoil level to the paving first, then lay the turf tight to the edge and cut it clean, so the joint stays neat as the grass grows in.

03
Lay the lawn
Prepare and level the ground, then lay and cut the turf to every edge.
04

Lawns laid throughout Bromley BR1 and BR2
We turf gardens across Bromley, from Bickley, Widmore and Sundridge Park to Bromley Common, Hayes and Shortlands. As well as Kirsty's lawn in Shortlands, in Bromley BR1 we have built a circular artificial lawn framed in mint Indian sandstone, for a client who wanted a green space with no mowing.
Our base is in Norbury, SW16, and we cover the whole of the Borough of Bromley, including Beckenham, Chislehurst, Orpington and Penge.
A straight lawn replacement near Bromley has cost £3,500 including VAT for 50m² in Catford and for 30m² in West Norwood. Lawns built with new paving cost more, such as £8,000 for the Kandla grey paving and turf in Shortlands.
Can you lay a lawn and a patio at the same time?
Yes, and it usually gives a better result because the levels are set together. In Shortlands the paving went around the edge first, then topsoil and new rolled turf filled the middle.
Is turf or seed better for a Bromley garden?
Turf gives you a finished lawn straight away and can be used lightly within a few weeks. Seed is cheaper but takes months to thicken and is easily disturbed by birds, rain and foot traffic. Most clients choose turf.
When is the best time to lay turf?
Spring and autumn are easiest because the ground is moist and it is not too hot. Turf can be laid in summer too, but it needs watering every day until it roots.
We have no side access. Can you still turf the garden?
Yes. Kirsty's garden in Shortlands was dug out and turfed with everything going through the house. We protect your floors and plan the deliveries around it.
Do you re-turf front lawns?
Yes. In Streatham we dug out an old front lawn in a curved bed and relaid it in Rolawn Medallion turf, cut neatly to the block paving, in one day for £900.
Which parts of Bromley do you turf?
All of BR1 and BR2, including Bickley, Widmore, Sundridge Park, Plaistow, Bromley Common, Hayes, Shortlands and Keston, and the rest of the borough.
