New Rolawn Medallion turf lawn in Catford

Helen's long back garden in Catford had a thin, patchy lawn. In two days we dug the soil and turned it over, took the old lawn and waste away, brought in fresh topsoil, then supplied and laid 50m² of Rolawn Medallion premium turf. £3,500 all in, including VAT.

Where we started

The brief

Helen's garden in Catford is a long, narrow plot with mature planting along both sides and a tree near the house. The old lawn had worn thin and patchy, with bare soil showing through.

Helen wanted a proper, healthy lawn again. Rather than laying turf over tired ground, the soil was dug and turned over and fresh topsoil was added first, so the new turf has the best start. It is a typical job for our turfing in Catford.

The tricky parts

What went into it

01

Digging, turning over and clearing

Old lawns leave the soil compacted and full of weeds and roots. We dug the ground and turned it over, which breaks up compaction and lets new roots, air and water get down into the soil, and took the old lawn and waste away.

02

Fresh topsoil

New topsoil was spread across the whole lawn area and levelled. It gives the turf a clean, fertile layer to root into and evens out dips and bumps.

03

Rolawn Medallion premium turf

We supplied and laid 50m² of Rolawn Medallion, a premium turf grown for a fine, dense, deep-green lawn. It gives a better-looking lawn from day one than standard turf.

04

A long, narrow garden

The lawn runs the length of the garden between planted borders, so the turf was laid carefully to the edges and around the tree to give clean lines on both sides.

Step by step

How we built it

  1. Digging and turning over

The old lawn area was dug and the soil turned over along the full length of the garden, and the old lawn and waste were removed.

Questions

About new turf lawns

Thinking about something similar? These are the questions we hear most.

How much does new turf cost in Catford?

Helen's 50m² lawn in Catford SE6 cost £3,500 including VAT, all in, in two days: digging and turning over the soil, removing the old lawn and waste, fresh topsoil and Rolawn Medallion turf supplied and laid. That is about £70 per m² for the complete job.

Do I need new topsoil before laying turf?

It makes a big difference. Fresh topsoil gives the new turf a clean, fertile layer to root into and lets us level out dips, so the lawn grows in evenly.

Why dig and turn over the soil first?

Old lawns leave compacted soil full of weeds and roots. Digging and turning it over breaks this up, so water drains properly and the new turf can root down.

What is Rolawn Medallion turf?

Medallion is Rolawn's premium turf, grown for a fine, dense, deep-green lawn that is hard-wearing enough for family gardens. It looks greener and more even than standard turf.

How should I look after new turf?

Water it well every day for the first couple of weeks unless it rains, keep off it while it roots, and give it a light first cut once it is firmly rooted.

How long does it take to lay a new lawn?

Helen's 50m² lawn took two days: digging, turning over and clearing on the first, then topsoil and turf on the second.

Do you lay turf near Catford?

Yes, including Lewisham, Forest Hill, Hither Green and Sydenham. See all our landscaping in Catford.
