As local paving contractors, we lay garden paths across Norbury: sandstone footpaths, stepping stones across the lawn and paths down the side return. Below is Najwan's light grey sandstone path and patio in South Norwood, 1.5 miles from our base here in Norbury.
Gardens in Norbury are mostly clay, and a lawn that is walked across every day to reach the shed or the back gate soon wears into a muddy track. A path gives that route a firm surface, and laid on a compacted base it stays level instead of sinking where the clay stays wet.
Najwan's path in South Norwood is light grey Indian sandstone in four sizes with gravel around it, leading to a 3m x 3m patio; at Jane's in Thornton Heath, concrete stepping stones set into the lawn make a lighter route to the shed. Both are a short drive from Norbury.
Every quote covers digging out, the base, the stone or gravel, cutting and edging, and taking the waste away.
A custom-made pergola over the side return, crazy paving jet washed and regrouted, around 15m of French drains connected to the gullies with panda gravel, and random concrete stepping stones across the lawn, in four days for £7,500 including VAT.
A small, tired patio fully dug out and replaced with mint Indian sandstone on a Type 1 base across the back of the house and down the side return, with a gravel strip along the fence, in two days for £5,000 including VAT.
New Indian sandstone paving and a footpath to the shed, with flower beds on both sides and new grass in the middle, in 5 days for £6,500 including VAT.
Around 20m² of grey 60x90 porcelain laid to drain towards the garden, a new wall clad in the same paving, a new manhole cover and a footpath to the garage, in four days for £5,000 including VAT.

Materials & possibilities
Path styles for a Norbury garden
The right path depends on how often it is used and how it should look against the lawn and beds. All three below are from our own jobs.
01
Sandstone with gravel
Soft, natural edges
Najwan's light grey sandstone path in South Norwood is framed by gravel, which lets rain drain away beside the slabs.
02
Stepping stones
Light touch on the lawn
At Jane's in Thornton Heath, random concrete paver stepping stones were set into the lawn as a path to the shed.
03
Side return paving
Joins front to back
Rebecca's mint Indian sandstone patio in Mitcham was carried on down the side return, on a full dig-out and a Type 1 base.
Getting the base right under a narrow path
A path is narrow, so any slab that is not fully bedded will rock. We dig out along the line, lay and compact a sub-base, then bed each slab down onto it. On clay, a gravel edge or a gentle cross-fall stops water pooling on the path after rain.
