A path you can walk in winter, not just summer.
As local paving contractors, we lay garden paths across Beckenham BR3: sandstone footpaths, stepping stones set in gravel or lawn, and paths down the side of the house to the back garden. Our nearest documented path is Najwan's sandstone footpath in South Norwood, with before and after photos below.

Your garden, considered
A route across a lawn is the first part of a garden to turn to mud, especially on the heavy clay many Beckenham gardens sit on. A good path has a firm base so the stones do not sink or rock, and edges that stop gravel and soil spreading. On Joanna's path in Bexleyheath we laid buff Indian sandstone on a Type 1 base, with Cotswold cream gravel between the stones and edging on both sides.
Most paths lead somewhere: to a shed, a patio at the end of the garden or round a lawn. Najwan's footpath in South Norwood runs through the garden to a new 3m x 3m patio, both framed with gravel, and at Mark's in Streatham Hill a sandstone path leads to the shed between new flower beds.
In the long, narrow gardens behind Beckenham's terraces, a straight path to the end of the garden often makes the whole space usable; in wider gardens around Eden Park and Park Langley, a path can curve round the lawn instead.

Materials & possibilities
The right path depends on how often you use it, what it leads to and how formal you want the garden to feel.
Each stone sits on a compacted Type 1 base, bedded so it does not rock, and set level with or just above the ground around it so water runs off rather than pooling. Edging along both sides keeps gravel on the path and soil in the beds, and stepping stones are spaced to a comfortable stride.

A path on a compacted Type 1 base, with stones set to shed water and gravel or joints that let rain soak away. Stepping stones laid straight onto clay tend to sink.
Yes. Mark's sandstone footpath in Streatham Hill leads to the shed between flower beds, and Jane's concrete stepping stones in Thornton Heath cross the lawn to the shed.
Paved is easier for wheelbarrows and bins; stones in gravel drain well and look softer. Joanna's path in Bexleyheath combined both, with sandstone set in Cotswold cream gravel.
Not with proper edging. On Joanna's path we fitted edging on both sides to keep the gravel in place.
Yes. Najwan's footpath and 3m x 3m patio are the same light grey Indian sandstone, and Marie's Kandla grey footpath matches the paving by the house.
