Grinding out the old grout
Before any new pointing could go in, all the old grout was fully ground out of the joints across the whole patio, so the new mortar bonds properly instead of sitting on top of failing joints.
Case study · Wimbledon SW19 · March 2026
Robert's Yorkstone patio in Wimbledon, around 60m², had dirty, stained slabs and tired joints. In three days we ground out all the old grout and repointed it the traditional way in a 3:1 sand and cement mix, jet washed the stone and treated it with professional products to remove the black spots and algae. We also jet washed the decking around the pool and did a little garden tidying. £5,000 including VAT.
Where we started
Robert's home in Wimbledon has around 60m² of Yorkstone patio running along the house and round to a circular seating area, plus a swimming pool with timber decking. Over the years the slabs had become stained with black spots and algae, and the old grout between them had worn.
The stone itself was sound, so it did not need replacing. It needed a deep clean and new pointing to bring it back. It is a good example of the patio repairs in Wimbledon and patio cleaning in Wimbledon we carry out.

They are usually lichen, which grows into the surface of the stone. A jet wash alone will not remove them; they need treating with a specialist product.
It is a traditional mortar of three parts sand to one part cement, pressed firmly into the joints by hand. It sets hard, keeps weeds out and suits natural stone patios.
New mortar needs a clean, deep joint to bond to. Grinding out the old, cracked grout first means the new pointing is solid and lasts, instead of flaking off a thin layer on top.
