Where we started

The brief

Jo wanted the area behind the house in Wimbledon turned into a clean, modern patio, with water draining away properly from the back of the house and an easy route down the garden.

That meant more than laying slabs: the drainage had to be planned with the manholes, the step at the back door and a small wall needed finishing to match, and a new path had to lead down beside the lawn. It is a typical brief for our patios in Wimbledon.

The tricky parts

What went into it

01

Eco drains connected to the manholes

Water needs somewhere to go when a patio meets the house. We installed eco channel drains along the patio and connected them into the manholes, so rainwater is collected and carried away rather than pooling at the back door. See our garden drainage in Wimbledon.

02

Two new manholes

Two new manholes were fitted within the paved area, set to the finished level of the patio so they stay accessible without becoming a trip point.

03

Step and wall clad to match

The step at the back door was fully clad in the same 60 × 90cm porcelain, and the small wall was clad to match, so everything reads as one finish rather than bare concrete or brick next to new paving.

04

A new footpath

We installed a footpath leading down the garden beside the lawn, so there is a firm, clean route to the end of the garden in any weather. See our garden paths in Wimbledon.

Step by step

How we built it

  1. Preparation and drainage

The area was prepared, the eco drains were installed and connected into the manholes, and the two new manholes were set to the finished level.

Questions

About porcelain patios and eco drains

Thinking about something similar? These are the questions we hear most.

How much does a porcelain patio cost in Wimbledon?

Jo's patio in Wimbledon SW19 came to £6,300 including VAT and took five days, covering 60 × 90cm porcelain, eco drains connected to the manholes, two new manholes, a clad step and wall, and a new footpath. The size of the area and the drainage needed make the biggest difference.

What are eco drains?

They are slim channel drains set along the edge of a patio. They collect rainwater from the paving and carry it into the drainage system, here connected to the manholes, so water does not pool against the house.

Can you clad steps and walls to match the patio?

Yes. Cladding the step and small wall in the same porcelain as the patio gives one consistent finish and hides bare concrete or old brickwork.

Can a manhole sit inside a porcelain patio?

Yes. Manholes have to stay accessible, so we set the covers to the finished level of the paving, where they sit neatly within the patio.

How long does a patio with drainage take?

Jo's patio took five days, including the eco drains, two new manholes, laying the porcelain, cladding the step and wall, and the new footpath.

Do you work across Wimbledon?

Yes, including Wimbledon Village, Raynes Park and South Wimbledon. See all our landscaping in Wimbledon.
