Removing the old fence
The old fence was taken down along the full run and all the waste was taken away.
Case study · Barnes SW13 · February 2024
Catherine's garden in Barnes had a long boundary fence that needed replacing, but the concrete posts were still sound. We took out the old fence, fixed 4x2 timbers to the existing posts, put up three arris rails per bay and fixed new feather edge boards, with new timber gravel boards along the bottom. Around 25m at 6ft, supplied and installed in two days for £3,000 including VAT.

Where we started
Catherine needed a long run of fence replaced along the garden in Barnes. The old fence had to go, but the concrete posts were still in good condition.
Keeping sound posts saves digging out and re-concreting every one, which keeps the cost down on a long run. It is a good example of the fencing we do around Putney and Richmond.
The tricky parts
Step by step
The old fence came down along the whole 25m, leaving the concrete posts in place, and the waste was taken away.
4x2 timbers were fixed to the existing concrete posts, three arris rails went up in each bay and new timber gravel boards were fitted.
The feather edge boards were fixed on one by one at 6ft high along the full run.
Budget
This fence cost £3,000 including VAT, all in: taking down the old fence, 4x2 timbers fixed to the existing concrete posts, three arris rails per bay, new feather edge boards at 6ft, new timber gravel boards and all waste taken away, along around 25m in two days. That is roughly £120 per metre, helped by keeping the existing posts. See our fencing in Putney page for more.

Catherine's 25m, 6ft feather edge fence in Barnes SW13 cost £3,000 including VAT, reusing the existing concrete posts, with arris rails, new gravel boards and removal of the old fence, done in two days.
Yes, if the posts are still sound. Here the concrete posts were kept and 4x2 timbers fixed to them, which saves the cost and time of replacing every post.
Arris rails are triangular timber rails fixed horizontally between the posts. The feather edge boards are nailed to them; this fence has three per bay for strength.
It is built from overlapping vertical boards, thicker on one edge than the other, fixed on site one by one. It is strong and suits long runs and sloping ground.
Yes, including Putney and Richmond. See all our landscape gardeners in Putney.
