Sound concrete posts
Concrete posts do not rot, so when they are still straight and solid they can stay. Keeping them saves the cost and mess of digging out and setting new posts.
Case study · Richmond TW9 · January 2025
Anne's fence in Richmond only needed new panels, not a whole new fence. The concrete posts were still sound, so we took out four old panels and slotted four new overlap panels into the existing posts. One day on site, £200 per panel to remove the old one and fit the new one: £800 including VAT and materials.

Where we started
Anne's garden in Richmond had a fence where the panels had come to the end of their life, but the concrete posts holding them were still in good condition. There was no need to pay for a whole new fence.
Because concrete posts are slotted, old panels can be lifted out and new ones dropped in without digging or disturbing the posts. It is one of the most cost-effective jobs we do for fencing in Richmond.
The tricky parts
Step by step
The four old panels were lifted out of the concrete posts and removed.
Four new overlap panels were slotted into the existing concrete posts along the garden boundary.
With the posts already in place, the whole job was done in a single day.
Budget
This job cost £800 including VAT and materials: four panels at £200 each, covering removing the old panel and supplying and fitting a new one. Keeping the existing concrete posts is what keeps the price down. If your posts are rotten or leaning, a full fence replacement is the better option. See our fencing in Richmond page for more.

Yes, if the posts are still solid. Concrete posts are slotted, so old panels can be lifted out and new ones dropped in without digging. Timber posts that have rotted at the base usually need replacing too.
Overlap (or lap) panels are made of horizontal boards that overlap each other inside a frame. They give a private screen and are one of the most affordable panel types.
Swapping a few panels into existing posts is usually done in a day, as it was here for four panels.
