Concrete posts
Timber posts are usually the first part of a fence to rot at ground level. We removed the old posts and set new concrete posts, which will not rot and hold the panels firmly in place.
Case study · Croydon · July 2026
Barry's old fence in Croydon had weathered grey after years outside. We took out the old panels and posts, set new concrete posts and concrete gravel boards, and fitted 13 heavy-duty closeboard panels at 2m high, plus a new gate with new hinges and locks that work from both sides. Two days, £3,150 including VAT.
Where we started
Barry's garden in Croydon was bounded by an old fence that had weathered grey along the side passage and around the back garden. Rather than patch it, Barry wanted the whole run replaced properly, along with the gate.
The new fence needed to be strong, private and long-lasting, with a gate that could be locked from either side. Concrete posts and gravel boards with heavy-duty closeboard panels are what we usually recommend for fencing in Croydon, because the parts that touch the ground will not rot.
The tricky parts
Step by step
We removed the old panels and dug out the old posts along the side passage and around the garden, and took all the waste away.
New concrete posts were set along the fence line, with concrete gravel boards fitted between them at the base.
Thirteen heavy-duty closeboard panels were slotted into the concrete posts above the gravel boards, at 2m high.
A new gate was hung with new hinges and fitted with locks that open from both sides, then everything was checked and the site cleared.
The finished work

Budget
This job cost £3,150 including VAT, covering removal of the old fence and posts, new concrete posts and gravel boards, 13 heavy-duty closeboard panels, the new gate with hinges and locks, fitting and waste removal, over two days. Longer runs, taller fencing or slatted designs change the price. See our fencing in Croydon page for more options.

Barry's fence in Croydon cost £3,150 including VAT for 13 heavy-duty closeboard panels on concrete posts and gravel boards, a new gate, removal of the old fence and waste. Price depends mainly on the length, height, panel type and any gates.
Timber posts tend to rot where they meet the ground, which is when fences start to lean. Concrete posts do not rot, and panels slot into them, so individual panels can be replaced later without disturbing the posts.
Closeboard panels are made of overlapping vertical boards fixed to a strong frame. They give full privacy, are stronger than lightweight lap panels and cope better with wind.
In most back gardens a fence can be up to 2 metres high without planning permission, which is the height we fitted here. Next to a road or footpath the limit is usually 1 metre, and conservation areas can have extra rules.
