Posts that carry the weight
A pair of full-height timber gates is heavy, and weak posts are the most common reason gates drop and drag. We removed the old posts and installed new 6-inch posts, so the gates hang from something solid.
Case study · Earlsfield SW18 · August 2026
David's old double gates in Earlsfield had weathered and worn out. We took out the gates and their posts, set new 6-inch posts, and supplied and fitted a pair of made-to-measure tongue and groove gates with new hinges and locks that work from both sides. All in one day, for £2,150 including VAT.
Where we started
The double gates at the back of David's garden in Earlsfield had reached the end of their life. The timber had weathered dark, and the gates and posts were tired, which made the opening harder to use and less secure.
David wanted a new pair that fitted the opening properly, opened and closed easily, and could be locked from either side. Replacing the posts at the same time was key: most gate problems start with the posts, which is why we include them in our garden gates in Earlsfield work.
Before & after
The tricky parts
Step by step
The old gates were taken off and the existing posts removed, and all the waste was taken away.
New 6-inch timber posts were installed to carry the weight of the new pair of gates.
The tongue and groove gates were made to fit the measured opening, with a ledged and braced frame on the garden side to keep them square.
We hung the gates on new hinges, fitted locks that work from both sides, and checked the swing, gaps and latching before handing over.

Posts carry all the weight of the gates. Old or undersized posts lean over time and the gates start to drop and drag. Fitting new 6-inch posts with new gates means the pair hangs true and keeps closing properly.
Yes. We fitted locks that can be opened and locked from inside the garden and from the other side, which is useful for rear and side access.

Tongue and groove boards interlock edge to edge, giving a smooth, solid face with no gaps. Featheredge boards overlap and have a more rustic look. Both can be ledged and braced to keep the gate square.
