Your garden, considered

Why so many Beckenham side gates drag

A gate that drags on the path or will not latch is nearly always a post problem. A gate is heavy and swings on one side, so the hanging post needs to be stiff and set deep in concrete. On heavy clay, which many Beckenham gardens have, a post that is only knocked into the ground soon leans and the gate drops.

Many Beckenham semis have a gate at the side of the house, often the only way bins and bikes get to the garden. We hang new gates on new or sound posts, with hinges sized for the weight and a lock that can be opened from both sides, so the garden is secure without trapping anyone out.

Gates are usually fitted with new fencing, which keeps the boards, height and finish matching. In Beckenham we fitted Jeremy's new gate at the same time as 12 new fence panels.

Materials & possibilities

Planning a new gate

A good gate starts with three decisions: how it is hung, how it locks, and whether it matches the fence around it.

01

Closeboard gate

Matches closeboard fencing

Vertical boards on a braced frame, the same look as a closeboard fence. The usual choice for a side gate between the house and a boundary fence.

02

Locks and latches

Secure but practical

A lock that opens from inside and outside means you can get in from the street with a key and out from the garden without one, as on Barry's new gate.

03

Gate with new fencing

One matching job

Hanging the gate while the fence is being replaced keeps the height, boards and finish consistent, like Jeremy's gate and 12 new panels in Beckenham.

The hanging post carries the gate

The post on the hinge side takes the whole weight of the gate every time it opens. We set it deep in concrete, use a timber or concrete post that suits the fence, and fit hinges rated for the gate, then hang it with a small gap at the bottom so it clears the ground as it settles.

A few useful answers

Garden Gates in Beckenham: your questions

Still deciding? Tell us about your garden and we can talk through the next step.

Read our warranty terms
My side gate drags on the ground. Can it be fixed?

Usually the hanging post has moved. We reset or replace the post in concrete and rehang the gate, or fit a new gate if the old one has warped.

Have you fitted gates in Beckenham?

Yes. Jeremy's job in Beckenham included a new gate fitted with 12 replacement fence panels on extended posts, for £4,820 including VAT.

Can a gate lock from both sides?

Yes. Barry's new gate was fitted with new hinges and locks that work from both sides, so it can be opened with a key from outside and without one from the garden.

Should I replace the gate and fence together?

If the fence is also old, yes. Fitting them together keeps everything matching, as with Shamir's 33 panels and 3 gates in East Dulwich.

What is the best gate for a Beckenham side passage?

A closeboard gate on a braced frame, hung on a post set in concrete, suits most side passages and matches closeboard fencing.

How long does it take to fit a gate?

A gate on its own is normally done in a day. With new fencing, Barry's 13 panels and gate took two days.

Will a new gate cope with clay soil?

Yes, as long as the posts are set deep in concrete. That stops the hanging post leaning as clay ground swells and shrinks.
