Egyptian limestone and artificial grass garden in Barnes

Hollie's back garden in Barnes was mud, soil and old concrete. We cleared it all out, through the house, and built a new garden: Egyptian limestone paving all the way round on a type 1 base, 40mm artificial grass in the middle on granite dust, flowerbeds along the sides, a recessed manhole cover and a new London yellow brick wall with coping stones. Ten days, £12,860 including VAT, all in.

Where we started

The brief

Hollie wanted a clean, low-maintenance back garden in Barnes in place of mud, soil and old concrete. The only way in was through the house, so everything had to be carried in and out by hand.

A limestone frame with artificial grass in the middle gives a neat, green garden that stays usable all year. It is a good example of the artificial grass and patio work we do around Putney and Barnes.

The tricky parts

What went into it

01

Access through the house only

Every bag of waste out and every slab, bag and roll in had to go through the house, which shapes how a job like this is planned.

02

Clearing mud, soil and concrete

The old ground was dug out down to a firm level and all the waste was taken away.

03

Egyptian limestone all round

Egyptian limestone paving was laid on a compacted type 1 base all the way round the garden.

04

40mm artificial grass on granite dust

The middle was built up with a granite dust base, then 40mm artificial grass was laid and brushed in.

05

Flowerbeds, a brick wall and a recessed manhole cover

Flowerbeds were formed along the sides, a new London yellow brick wall was built with coping stones on top, and a recessed manhole cover was fitted so the paving runs over it.

Step by step

How we built it

  1. Digging out

The mud, soil and concrete were dug out and carried through the house, and hardcore went in, compacted with a plate compactor.

Questions

About limestone and artificial grass gardens

Thinking about something similar? These are the questions we hear most.

How much does a limestone and artificial grass garden cost in Barnes?

Hollie's garden in Barnes SW13 cost £12,860 including VAT over ten days, covering the dig-out, Egyptian limestone paving, 40mm artificial grass, flowerbeds, a yellow brick wall and a recessed manhole cover, with access through the house.

What base does artificial grass need?

A firm, free-draining base. Here the ground was dug out, hardcore compacted, and a granite dust layer levelled on top before the grass went down.

Can you do a garden when the only access is through the house?

Yes. Everything is carried in and out by hand, as on this job. It takes a little longer, which is reflected in the time and price.

What is a recessed manhole cover?

It is a cover with a tray on top that is filled with the same paving, so the manhole stays accessible but almost disappears into the patio.

Do you work near Barnes?

Yes, including Putney, Wandsworth and Richmond.
