Removing the old fence
The old fence was taken down and removed first, leaving a clear line for the new posts.
Case study · Sydenham SE26 · February 2025
Matthew's back garden in Sydenham needed a new fence and more patio. We took out the old fence and put up new concrete posts, gravel boards and six closeboard panels, extended the concrete paving by three rows and fitted two new manhole covers. Three days, £4,860 all in, including VAT.

Where we started
Matthew's back garden in Sydenham had an old fence along the boundary that needed replacing, and a patio that was too small for the space.
The plan was to replace the fence properly with concrete posts and gravel boards, extend the existing concrete paving by three rows, and fit new manhole covers where the patio now covers the drains. It covers both our fencing in Sydenham and patios in Sydenham.
The tricky parts
Step by step
The old fence was removed along the boundary.
New concrete posts and gravel boards went in, then six closeboard panels were slotted into place.
The concrete paving was extended by three rows of slabs.
Two new manhole covers were fitted in the paving.

Timber posts usually rot at ground level first, which is when fences start to lean. Concrete posts do not rot, and panels slot into them, so a single panel can be replaced later without touching the posts.
Yes. Here the existing concrete paving was extended by three rows of slabs to give more usable space between the house and the lawn.
Drains must stay accessible, so where the paving goes over a manhole a new cover is fitted at the finished patio level. This job needed two new covers.
