Felling in a tight garden
We brought the tree down onto the lawn and path, keeping clear of the house, the wall and the planting either side.
Case study · Chislehurst BR7 · August 2026
Alice wanted a tree taken out of the back garden in Chislehurst, roots and all. In one day we felled the tree, dug out the stump and roots beside the boundary wall and drain, and took every bit of waste away. £720 for the tree and £500 for the stump, including VAT.
Where we started
Alice had a tree in the back garden in Chislehurst that needed to go completely. It stood close to the brick boundary wall, beside a drain, and had grown too big for the space.
Cutting it down to the ground would have left a stump and live roots right next to the wall and drain, so Alice asked us to take out the stump as well and leave the area clear. That is a common request for tree surgery in Chislehurst, where many gardens have mature trees.
The tricky parts
Step by step
The tree was felled, with the branches and trunk brought down onto the lawn and path ready to be cut up and cleared.
We dug around the stump by hand, cut through the main roots and lifted the stump out from beside the wall and drain.
All branches, timber, the stump and roots were removed from site, and the garden and paths were cleaned up.
The finished work
Budget
Felling the tree and removing all the waste cost £720 including VAT. Digging out and removing the stump and roots cost a further £500 including VAT, so £1,220 for the whole job, done in one day. Bigger trees, difficult access or work close to buildings change the price. See more on our tree surgery in Chislehurst page.

For this back-garden tree in Chislehurst BR7, felling and waste removal cost £720 including VAT, and digging out the stump cost £500 including VAT. The price depends on the size of the tree, access and how close it is to walls, buildings or drains.
If you want to replant, turf or pave the area, yes. A stump left in the ground takes years to rot and can send up new shoots. Digging it out leaves clear soil you can use straight away.
Near walls, drains and paving, digging by hand lets us follow the roots and avoid damaging anything. Grinding is quicker in open ground, but digging out removes the stump and main roots completely.
Much of Chislehurst is a conservation area, where you normally have to give Bromley Council six weeks' notice before felling a tree, and trees with a Tree Preservation Order need consent. It is worth checking before any work is booked.
