Removing the old artificial grass
The old artificial grass was taken up across all the play areas so the new grass could go down on a fresh, properly prepared base.
Case study · Tooting SW17 · May–June 2025
Little Beams nursery in Tooting needed new artificial grass across its outdoor play areas. We took up the old artificial grass, put down a new permeable hardcore base with a granite dust laying course, and laid around 120m² of new 40mm artificial grass. Five days on site, £16,000 including VAT, fully done.

Where we started
Little Beams is a children's nursery in Tooting with outdoor play areas covered in artificial grass. The old grass had worn out and needed replacing across around 120m².
Rather than lay new grass on the old base, everything was taken back and rebuilt on a new permeable base, so the play areas drain properly and stay level under heavy daily use. It is a good example of the artificial grass in Tooting we install for homes and businesses.
The tricky parts
Step by step
The old artificial grass was removed across the play areas.
A permeable hardcore base was laid and compacted, then topped with a compacted granite dust laying course.
New 40mm artificial grass was rolled out, joined and fitted across the play areas.
The play equipment went back on the new grass, ready for the children.

This nursery has a 40mm pile, which feels soft and full underfoot while standing up well to daily play.
Rain has to drain straight through artificial grass. A permeable hardcore base lets it soak away, so the play area does not puddle or stay wet.
Granite dust compacts into a smooth, firm and level laying course on top of the base while still letting water through, which keeps the finished grass flat.
