Block paving driveway in West Wickham

Emily's wide driveway in West Wickham was dug out and rebuilt in Brett block paving in three colours, framed with Marshalls Keykerb bullnosed kerbs in charcoal, with driveway lighting and a new flower bed. A mini digger and grab lorry handled the dig-out. One week, £12,000 all in.

Where we started

The brief

Emily's detached house in West Wickham has a wide frontage, and the driveway is the first thing anyone sees. Emily wanted a new driveway with room to park comfortably, a crisp, defined edge, and lighting so the approach to the house looks good and feels safe after dark.

That meant taking the old surface right out and starting again with a proper base, then choosing blocks and kerbs that suit a large, modern frontage. It is a good example of the block paving in West Wickham we build across the Bromley borough.

The tricky parts

What went into it

01

A full dig-out on a wide frontage

A driveway this size means a lot of material to remove. We used a mini digger to dig the whole area out to depth and a grab lorry to take the soil and old material away, which kept the site clear and the job on schedule.

02

Three colours, laid as bands

The Brett blocks were laid in three colours as long bands running across the drive. On a wide frontage the stripes break up the area and make the driveway look deliberate rather than a single flat colour.

03

Charcoal Keykerb edging

We framed the driveway with Marshalls Keykerb small bullnosed kerbs in charcoal, including the matching external angles on the corners. They hold the blocks firmly in place and give a clean dark border against the grey paving.

04

Lighting and planting

Driveway lighting was added along the drive, and a new flower bed softens the edge of the paving, so the frontage feels finished rather than just hard surface.

Step by step

How we built it

  1. Dig-out with a mini digger

The old driveway was dug out to depth with a mini digger, and a grab lorry removed the soil and waste.

  2. Base and kerbs

A compacted sub-base was built, and the Marshalls Keykerb charcoal kerbs, including the bullnosed external angles, were set all around the edge.

  3. Laying the Brett blocks

The Brett block paving was laid in three colours as bands across the drive, cut neatly to the kerbs.

  4. Lighting, planting and clean-down

The driveway lighting and flower bed were finished, the joints were sanded and the whole drive was washed down for handover.

Budget

What it cost

This driveway cost £12,000 including VAT, all in: the dig-out with a mini digger, grab lorry waste removal, sub-base, Brett block paving in three colours, Marshalls Keykerb charcoal edging, driveway lighting, the new flower bed and labour, over one week. A smaller drive or a single colour would cost less. See our driveways in West Wickham page for more options.

Questions

About block paving driveways

Thinking about something similar? These are the questions we hear most.

How much does a block paving driveway cost in West Wickham?

Emily's driveway in West Wickham BR4 cost £12,000 including VAT, covering a full dig-out with a mini digger and grab lorry, Brett block paving in three colours, Marshalls Keykerb edging, lighting and a flower bed. Size and the extras you choose make the biggest difference.

What is Marshalls Keykerb?

Keykerb is Marshalls' range of small block kerbs designed to edge block paving. The small bullnosed version has a rounded top that is kinder to tyres and feet, and matching external angles give neat corners.

Can you mix block paving colours?

Yes. Laying two or three colours as bands or a border breaks up a large area and adds definition. We help you choose colours that suit the house and the size of the drive.

How long does a new block paving driveway take?

This wide driveway took one week, including the dig-out, base, kerbs, laying, lighting and planting. Smaller drives are usually quicker.

Do you build driveways elsewhere in Bromley?

Yes, across the borough, including Bromley, Hayes, Orpington and Chislehurst. See the Bromley borough page.
